“Let’s throw a servo run in the arvo to grab an esky chockers of tinnies.” Did you get that?.. anyone?
Here’s that same sentence in American: Let’s run to the gas station in the afternoon to get a cooler full of small beer cans. Australians are masters are abbreviating the Queen’s English and you’ll do well to know some of the more common ones. I was lucky enough go on a pub crawl with Justin from “AussieYouTours” who’s totally on it and compiled a useful guide (https://aussieyou.com.au/blogs/news/aussie-slang)
Some highlights and additions below:
Brekkie – Breakfast
Arvo – afternoon
Avo – avocado
Barbie – barbeque
Stubbie – small beer bottle
Tinnie – small can of beer
Esky – cooler box
Chockers – very full
Servo – gas station (“petrol” station if you’re with Brits)
Bottle-o – liquor store
Goon – cheap boxed wine
HSP - “Halal Snack Pack.” What I can best describe as a doner kebab lasagna, a bed of lamb kebab served on a bed of fries with condiments. It’s absolutely terrible for you and the ideal way to end a night out on the town.
“Holy Trinity” trio of condiments which can go on the HSP
There’s another useful phrase which I won’t reference here to maintain the sanctity of this blog 😊 Ping if you can’t help yourself.
